Our Story

Learn more about the history of Morgan’s family business and the developments made since 1971.

In the beginning, Jack Morgan and his brother Roy joined his father’s bakery. After World War II, where Jack served, he married Audrey and purchased a small bakery. Together they built this business and it became their occupation for the next 20 years. Jack’s eldest son Roger entered the next business venture. The result was a small run down licensed grocery in Melbourne. Jack wanted to smarten it up and completed a significant refurbishment opening again as a Big Star Food Centre. Shortly after Roger was called up for National Service, so brother Peter joined the business.

Over the years, the business expanded into nearby towns offering the benefits of Extra Shopping Power to a wider population. The Extra Shopping Power program was introduced by Roger who had a passion to continue great relationships with the customers. In 1987, third son Neal joined the business. Jack passed away in 2001, and so the next generation of Morgan’s, Roger’s son Jay and Peter’s son William joined. In 2005, Roger and Audrey retired, and now Peter and Neal operate the family business.

What our customers say

I have always been impressed by the positive and pleasant attitudes of the majority of staff over the years. I would like you all to know that they all deserve Sensational Service notice as they are consistently pleasant, well mannered, extremely helpful and cheerful.

Gill Williamson, Bacchus Marsh

I had the pleasure of shopping in your store and i wish to acknowledge and inform you of the surprise and delight I experienced on this occasion. With my wife we were looking at some fresh foods in the meat and fish section and we were amazed when one of your female staff spoke to us and gave us some valuable (unsolicited) advice.......fantastic! This is something we have never experienced in any other supermarket in more the 40 years of shopping. Your friendly staff should be recognised and rewarded. This service plus your tremendous opening specials has converted us. Goodbye Coles and Woolies, hello IGA! We are converted for all time. Well done!

Nigel Cowan, Dealer Principal at Victory Auto Brokers

I was shopping with my 14 month old daughter, Ruby. Unfortunately Ruby decided she might like to grab a bottle of vinegar off the shelf without my noticing and it fell on the floor, smashed and went everywhere. We were attended to immediately by Kirsty, who asked another staff member to get a mop and bucket. Then whilst she was collecting the glass the store manager also came to help clean up and make sure we were alright. Everybody was absolutely delightful and most helpful, especially as I had my hands full with Ruby and my shopping, Kirsty was extra cautious to ensure that Ruby did not go anywhere near the floor.

I also work in retail and it is a very rare find these days to see good customer service, a credit to the store manager.

Vicki & Ruby

I would also like to mention your manager, Debra. All the staff have a happy and helpful nature. Thanking you for the service we receive.

After shopping a few weeks in your well lit and set out supermarket, I can't wait to get enough points to get that large bottle of whiskey in the ESP case. Its nice to see happy faces on your staff.

K. Barker, Melton

would like to take this opportunity to show my appreciation for the customer service I received recently from your supermarket. It was one of those extremely hot days, I had my arms full, I was still a few people down the queue, I was VERY pregnant and was starting to feel faint. A young assistant named Rachel pulled me out and processed my few groceries. Not being used to such service and being very much "out of it" I believe I did not even thank her.
This may appear to be a small service but it was thoughtful and considerate. In this modern world where customer service is only a concept, I would like to thank Rachel and make her aware that her gesture was very much appreciated.

Naomi Botes, Melton

"I'me just writing this note to say helpful your staff were to me last Friday night. My young son had fallen out of the trolley (he's fine) in the Fruit & Vege section. The young girl from the Deli. came over to see if he was alright and get me another packet of eggs to replace the one that had fallen out and another young chap, Nathan I think got me another trolley to replace the one I had. Both of them should be commended for the assistance they gave to me, and you should be pleased that you have caring young employees."

Sheryl Whiskey, Sunbury

Just a short letter to express my appreciation of the service you and your company have given me in the past. Also to express my confidence that the same service will take your customers into the 21st Century. Being old, I'm sometimes a bit slow, but find the patience of your staff beyond praise, alas I am not eloquent, so cannot find the right words. This though I will say, always I find the ready smile or a helping hand.

H.D. Brown, Rowsley

The staff are the friendliest, most accommodating I have seen. Also there is always quick service through the checkout.

K. Bright, Monegeetta

The members of St Brigid's Gisborne Conference of St Vincent de Paul wish to congratulate and thank you and your staff for your efforts and results in initiating, organising and making space available for a "Giving Tree". The magnificent response is a great indicator of the generosity of your customers
We can assure you that not only much joy and happiness will be brought to many children in less fortunate families in the area, but many parents who because of their circumstances had very little or nothing for thei children's Christmas are now greatly relieved. Once again we thank you and your staff for the wonderful unsolicited action.
